Microlearning Volunteer Training

microlearning volunteer training

Title and Organization

Legal Assistant Volunteer Training for the No More a Stranger Foundation

Date

September 2021 – April 2022

Problem

Volunteers participating in the previous course were unprepared for assisting in legal clinics. An updated version of the course focused on the necessary skills and knowledge (separately) needed to successfully assist in weekly clinics.

My Role

Designer, developer, assistant project manager on a six-person team

Solution

We developed an 8-week microlearning course in a free LMS app that could easily be translated into another language and accessed and used by learners from a variety of backgrounds and varying levels of technology access. We also built a website for skill development where volunteers can practice collecting and creating applications with clients.

Challenges

The non-profit organization operates on a tight budget and volunteers have varying levels of motivation, technical skills and available time.

Design Strategies

We used a full instructional design process including front-end analysis, instructional strategy development, and prototyping to create a useful and level-appropriate product for the new volunteers.

I personally developed the style guide and design strategy to ensure everything students accessed in the app was uniform. I created a development checklist so that any member of the team could develop a tested lesson with user-predictable functions in the app. I also designed and developed the website for volunteers to access the skill-based lessons using Google Sites so it would be easy to maintain in the future.

Results

Everything was designed uniformly and well-documented so it was easy to pass the course back over to the non-profit upon completion. They were able to create a Spanish version for a very low cost, and they continue to update and maintain the volunteer training.
