Problem
Instructional Design Assistants (IDAs) needed a way to demonstrate the skills and competencies they know coming into their new position and a way to document what they learn on the job.
My Role
Designer and developer on a three-person team
Solution
We focused on the skills and software IDAs need to use first, followed by more complex or less used skills. We developed assessment methods and digital badge requirements to allow IDAs to share their skills beyond their job. We used Badgr to manage the badge requirements and issuance. All the instructions and links to badge requirements were added to an internal Canvas course.
I personally worked on the badges for Accessibility, Copyright & Creative Commons, and Screencasting.
Challenges
It was difficult to encourage full adoption by the current IDAs and full-time designers tasked with training new IDAs.
Results
IDAs who used the training and badge requirements as guidelines for their learning are able to demonstrate their skills, both on job and outside the organizaton. Encouraging full organization adoption, though, is still difficult
